Ashford Pupils Take a Front Row Seat with Recycling Initiative

Local housebuilder Barratt Homes has partnered with Chilmington Green Primary School, located nearby its Chilmington Green development, to promote the importance of recycling. The housebuilder encouraged pupils to collect plastic packaging to fill a ‘Zero Waste Box’, and in return for their efforts the pupils have received a bench made out of recycled plastic.

It is estimated that UK households produce 2.5 million metric tons of plastic waste per year, but only 40% of it gets recycled, whilst the rest of the products will be thrown out just after one use.[1] To learn about the importance of recycling, the pupils from Chilmington Green Primary School have been busy filling their waste box supplied by TerraCycle with plastic, and once full, the box was sent away to a recycling facility, which allowed pupils to recycle approximately 1907 units of waste.

This was part of a wider campaign implemented at schools across Home Counties, with a total of 7,827 units of waste recycled.

Natalie Perry, Sales and Marketing Director for Barratt Kent, commented: “We have pledged to become the first housebuilder to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, to building net zero carbon homes by 2030, and to purchasing 100% of its operational energy from renewal sources. With sustainability at our core, we like to work with local communities to encourage green thinking. The pupils from Chilmington Green Primary have shown great enthusiasm for the recycling campaign, demonstrating how small steps can produce great results.”

Zoe Arscott, Assistant Headteacher at Chilmington Green Primary School, added: “The pupils really enjoyed collecting plastic and got incredibly involved!  This donation has made it easy for us to teach the importance of recycling in a very engaging and fun way for the pupils. They also loved the bench that we have received from Barratt Kent and are now getting some good use out of it!”

Barratt Kent has a selection of three and four-bedroom homes available at its Chilmington Green development in Ashford with prices starting from £384,995 for a three-bedroom home.
